5 Reasons Being Vegan is Good for Your Health
It seems as though veganism is allll the rage in 2019. From beyond meat landing huge deals with almost every fast food company in the US, to celebs like Kim Kardashian not only endorsing but FOLLOWING a plant-based diet, the strides in the vegan community have been groundbreaking. Now, you might be wondering, ‘what are the benefits of veganism?’ Well I’m here to tell you 5 reasons why being vegan is extremely good for your health. Follow along!
1. More Fiber in Your Diet
Fiber is something that is necessary in your diet. It regulates blood sugar levels, helps with regular bowel movements, lowers cholesterol, and helps you absorb vital nutrients from foods. When you follow a vegan, whole foods, plant-based diet, you are naturally going to be eating MUCH more fiber than someone who follows the standard American diet. Foods like lentils, peas, chickpeas, organic soy, whole grains, nuts, and seeds provide lots of protein but are also high in fiber. Animal proteins lack this necessary fiber. Fruits and vegetables are also high in fiber so you won’t be lacking in this valuable nutrient.
2. Lower Risk of Developing Heart Disease
Did you know that heart disease is the NUMBER ONE killer in the world? That’s pretty mind-blowing. Consuming a diet that is rich in plants and whole foods can largely prevent heart disease. Animal products are the only source of dietary cholesterol and are also high in saturated fats (which raise cholesterol levels) so you’re doing a big favor to your heart when you eliminate these products. Scientists have found that following a vegan diet drastically reduces cholesterol levels, which keeps your arteries clear and clog free.
3. Controls Obesity
Veganism is great for weight loss. Consuming a diet high in animal products will lead to an over abundance in cholesterol and saturated fats which won’t have a positive effect on us. Studies have shown that when comparing vegan diets to non-vegan diets, vegans have the lowest body mass index and are less prone to obesity. This is due to higher fiber, a larger intake of nutrient dense foods, and the removal of saturated fat-heavy animal products.
4. Fewer Migraines
Migraines are a phenomenon that affects 14.7% of our entire population. The most frustrating part about this is there is no known cure for migraines. As well as playing a role in reducing the risk of certain diseases, veganism can help lower the onset of migraine attacks. Migraines are often linked to the food in our diet with chocolate and cheese being some of the main triggers. Vegan diets are rich in whole foods that are more pure and less processed. This means fewer migraines for everyone.
5. Skin Health
Our skin is the largest organ on our body, which means we BEST be taking good care of it. Milk and other dairy products are known to be huge culprits in breakouts because they can disrupt our body’s hormonal balance. Plant-based diets are rich in fruits and vegetables that in turn are rich in antioxidants. Antioxidants decrease inflammation and help build collagen, which gives the skin more elasticity and helps to slow down the aging process.
